Designing a Sustainable Forest Management Plan

Purpose

The goal is to develop the student’s creative skills and understanding of sustainable forest management by designing a detailed management plan, including hand-drawn maps and illustrations.

Instructions

  1. Select a Forest Area
    • Choose a specific forest area to manage. This can be a local forest or an area described in your course materials.
  2. Research
    • Conduct thorough research on sustainable forestry practices using only physical library resources, peer-reviewed journals, and consultations with forestry experts. Use at least five credible sources.
  3. Design the Management Plan
    • Create a detailed management plan that includes the following components:
      • Written Report: Provide a 1500-2000 word report outlining the objectives, strategies, and practices for sustainable management of the forest area.
      • Hand-Drawn Maps: Draw detailed maps of the forest area showing different management zones (e.g., conservation areas, logging areas, recreation areas).
      • Illustrations: Include hand-drawn illustrations of key management practices (e.g., selective logging, reforestation techniques, wildlife habitat protection).
  4. Submission
    • Submit your management plan as a printed document during class. Ensure that the written report, maps, and illustrations are all included and clearly labeled.
    • Follow proper formatting guidelines: double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font for the written report, and clear, neat labeling for maps and illustrations.
